Our innovative partnership with Eddie Stobart, which commenced last year, has seen its first cohort of logistics apprentices hit the road for the first time.

The apprentices, who are employed by Eddie Stobart, have completed a series of classroom based training workshops to ensure they have the necessary knowledge across subjects such as Health & Safety, First Aid, Traffic Planning and Warehousing.

But, crucially, the apprenticeship programme also allows learners to gain their LGV driving licence – and that benefit is one which appeals to many potential apprentices.

However, one of the key aspects of this training model is the on-the-job experience. Once our instructors have ensured the apprentices are fully prepared, Eddie Stobart driver mentors take over – accompanying the...

One Apprentice to receive a great kick-start to his career is 17-year-old Nathan Deugo. Nathan is currently a Body Repair Apprentice at Longtown Body Repair and is completing his Apprenticeship with us. But a setback with his previous employer, which saw Nathan made redundant, nearly stopped his career in its tracks.

We stepped in to help secure Nathan employment at the Longtown garage and enable him to continue his training – something he feels he may not have been able to do on his own.

Nathan likes the fact that he is able to do a productive job from the start and enjoys the mix of classroom theory and practical training that the Apprenticeship offers. “I love my new job. I am always learning something new – in fact I am putting in extra hours of my own time after w...

In addition to working closely with local businesses to secure employment for apprentices, we also work in partnership with employers to deliver bespoke Apprenticeship programmes to new staff.

Expert accountants Armstrong Watson have been working in partnership with us and benefit from a structured programme which ensures their new employees gain relevant accountancy skills and expertise.

Accountancy apprentices work towards their Level 3 and Level 4 Accountancy Diplomas which are advanced and higher level Apprenticeships and many apprentices use the qualifications as a base to progress to full chartered accountant status.

Taking it a step further, however, are apprentices Zoe Newsome, Lauren Cannar and Holly Heslop. Not only have they progressed through their Apprenticeship programmes ...

Logistics is a key sector within the Cumbrian economy but one where there’s traditionally been many barriers for young people looking to become involved.

Apprenticeships are therefore even more essential to help bring highly-skilled young people into the sector and overcome the usual problems sometimes associated with young drivers.

One such apprentice to benefit is Stuart Faulder. Stuart found employment with haulier Tyson Burridge in Workington. His training included topics such as health and safety, first aid, warehousing skills and traffic planning – but the big benefit was that Stuart was able to gain...

Our apprentices today got the opportunity to learn new skills when a unique job-swap, to help promote National Apprenticeship Week, saw accountancy students swap roles with motor mechanics.

Accountancy apprentices from Armstrong Watson are trained by us and work towards their Level 3 and Level 4 Accountancy Diplomas. Many apprentices use the qualifications as a base to progress to full chartered accountant status but, today, they got their hands dirty in the workshop during a session which saw them fitting tyres, replacing brakes and repairing exhausts.

Meanwhile the motor vehicle apprentices, who are employed at garages and body shops around Carlisle, went back to the classroom with calculators in hand. They were given advice around business cashflow and the financial aspects of running...

Albert Webdale, one of our Motor Vehicle apprentices, has had a dream week of work experience at the final round of the World Rally Championship in Wales last weekend. Sixteen-year-old Albert from Cliburn is completing a motor vehicle Fast Fit Apprenticeship with us and was fortunate to be offered the opportunity by Carlisle-based tyre manufacturer DMACK Tyres.

Albert got the enviable experience when DMACK offered the placement to System Training. Our motor vehicle apprentices are fully trained in changing tyres and brakes but the opportunity to work on a demanding round of the world championship was a massive challenge.

DMACK is one of only two tyre manufacturers authorised to supply the world’s best drivers with specialist rally tyres and Albert helped the company fit over 400 ch...
